The garage door opener provides direction, but it lacks the raw strength to lift a 300-pound door alone. When a spring fails, the motor attempts to pull that dead weight without assistance. This creates massive internal friction, stripping nylon gears and burning out the circuit board.

Pressing the remote with a broken spring often results in a burning smell or grinding noise. This quickly turns a simple spring repair into a full motor replacement. Simultaneously, lifting cables lose the tension they need to stay on the drums. Once tension disappears, cables often jump their tracks or become tangled, posing a significant safety risk to vehicles and people.

Tracking and Roller Realignment Issues

A garage door must travel along its metal tracks with perfect symmetry. When a single spring breaks, the door pulls unevenly. This lopsided force twists the door panels and forces the rollers to grind against the tracks at an awkward angle.

Over time, this pressure bends the tracks out of vertical alignment. Once the tracks lose their shape, the rollers can pop out entirely. This causes the door to hang precariously from the ceiling, creating a life-threatening hazard for anyone nearby.

Panel Stress and Structural Integrity

Garage door panels are designed to move vertically, not to withstand bending forces. Without spring support, the motor pulls directly against the door’s mass. This often causes the top panel to “buckle” or crease where the opener arm attaches.

This structural damage is often permanent and cannot be hammered out. Instead of just replacing springs, you may be forced to buy an entirely new door because the metal skin folded under its own unassisted weight.
